Helmed by Martin McDonagh, ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ takes us to a small Irish town of the 1920s. Here resides a pair of two friends – Colm (Brendan Gleeson), a folk musician, and Padraic (Colin Farrell), a dull man with a nice heart. However, their friendship starts to crumble after the former decides to stop speaking to Padraic. Colm wants to spend the rest of his life composing music and having meaningful conversations. Which is why he starts finding Padraic too dull for his taste.
On the other hand, Padraic becomes sad after learning about Colm’s new behaviour. He tries hard to save his friendship. But Colm does not budge. He even gives Padraic an ultimatum to cut off one of his fingers every time he tries to talk to him. This scenario leads to an all-out brawl between Colm and Padraic.
The black comedy-drama premiered at this year’s Venice International Film Festival and received a 15-minute standing ovation there. Farrell bagged the Volpi Cup for Best Actor and McDonagh (known for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) won the Golden Ostella for Best Screenplay at the event.
