Well, there is a piece of good news, for now. The government has decided against banning or censoring the content in any form. They won’t impose any rules or guidelines. The streaming platforms will have to continue to adhere to the self-regulated principles that are already in place.
The decision was made on the sidelines of a summit that took place recently. Amit Khare, the secretary of the Ministry of Information and The Broadcast, made things clear. In a statement, he said that the government of India understands that the model of business for OTT platforms is different from those of movies or Television shows. It is, therefore, impractical to have the same set of rules and regulations.
It is a massive relief for the digital medium as the dissent was increasing among them lately. We still have to see if this stance is undisturbed in future as well or not when ‘uncomfortable’ content hit the headlines again.
