US streaming platform Hulu has been churning out hit after hit series in recent times. From Murders In The Building, The Bear, to The Dropout and more, Hulu’s original content slate has been rocking the streaming charts like never before. After winning 2023 with its hit shows, Hulu is poised to begin 2024 with a winner too – in its next original show, ‘Shōgun’.
Hulu has also revealed the release date for Shōgun, along with a trailer. Shōgun will premiere on Hulu in the US on 1 February 2024. The series will stream on Disney Plus Hotstar in India, almost around the same time as Hulu in the US. Shōgun comes from prolific content creator FX Networks. Have a look at the trailer for ‘Shōgun’ here –
Set in the Japan of the 1600s, ‘Shōgun’ is a period drama that tells the story of a bold English pilot whose ship is blown ashore in Japan, where he encounters two people who are to change his life: a warlord with his own quest for power, and a beautiful interpreter torn between two ways of life and two ways of love. ‘Shōgun’ is adapted from the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell. It was earlier made into a television miniseries in 1980.
The official synopsis of Shōgun reads – “The collision of two ambitious men from different worlds and a mysterious female samurai: John Blackthorne, a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga, a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance”.
British actor Cosmo Jarvis (Persuasion) will star as Pilot Major John Blackthorne in Shōgun. Hiroyuki Sanada (Avengers: Endgame, Army of the Dead, Bullet Train (2022), John Wick: Chapter 4) stars as Lord Yoshi Toranaga in the series. Anna Sawai (Giri/Haji, Pachinko) is set to play Toda Mariko in Shōgun.
Given the premise of Shōgun, and the enduring popularity of the 1980 TV series, it’s quite obvious that the series will be lapped up by Hulu subscribers. Hulu describes it as an epic saga of war, passion, and power set in feudal Japan – an alluring proposition by any standard.
The series will be a bi-lingual one in English and Japanese. Shōgun is created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, produced by Hiroyuki Sanada, and developed by FX Networks.
