Set in the backdrop of World War II and the holocaust, ‘We Were The Lucky Ones’ follows the Kurc family, a rich and successful family of Polish Jews, comprising five siblings and their parents. As Hitler intensifies his persecution of Jews in Europe, the Kurc family finds itself scattered—a few members landing in concentration camps, while others manage to escape to France, Brazil, West Africa and Russia. Once the war ends, the surviving family attempts to find each other and reunite.

The Kurc siblings in ‘We Were The Lucky Ones’ are played by Joey King, Logan Lerman, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Amit Rahav and Hadas Yaron. Lior Ashkenazi and Robin Weigert play their parents. The series is an adaptation of Georgia Hunter’s 2017 book of the same name, based on real events in the life of her own family.

The series has been described by critics as equal parts harrowing and life-affirming. One critic calls ‘We Were The Lucky Ones’ a “defiant and harrowing, soul shattering story—one that gives the full range of the horrors that occur when you’ve been displaced, unmoored, and dehumanized”. Another critic has called it “a visceral, touching, sweeping and profoundly human show, one of the best you’ll see all year”.

The official synopsis of ‘We Were The Lucky Ones’ reads – “A Jewish family separated at the start of World War II is determined to survive and reunite”.
