It’s the season of prequels to blockbusters. The two titles that had all our attention since a while now were Furiosa starring Anya Taylor Joy and Chris Hemsworth and the Hunger Games prequel. It seems like the wait is going to be long and exciting as Lionsgate dropped Hunger Games: The Ballad of Snowflakes and Snakes teaser trailer today. And we can’t contain out excitement!
While there was no no live-action footage in the teaser trailer, the announcement features a snowy forest from which a golden snowbird and snake arises. Living up to the title of the prequel, we suppose. The teaser clearly hints at tensions between Lucy and Snow where one is a songbird, and the other a snake. The trailer also makes the date of release official as November 17th, 2023, marking 8th year since “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2”. Watch the teaser here :
The commercially and critically acclaimed Hunger Games franchise announced its prequel ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’, based on Suzanne Collins’ #1 New York Times bestselling novel of the same name in April 2020, just a month before the release of the novel. Francis Lawrence, who helmed The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and both Mockingjay adaptations gets back to directing the prequel as well. Tom Blythe (Billy the Kid) plays young Coriolanus Snow and West Side Story star Rachel Zegler plays Lucy Gray Baird. The character of Snow was originally played by Hollywood veteran Donald Sutherland in the franchise.
The story of Ballad of Snowbird and Snakes takes place decades before the adventures of Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen. Katniss played in the 74th Hunger Games and Baird will be a part of the 10th Hunger Games. The prequel will revolve around the 10th Hunger Games and Lucy’s connection with Snow-Panem’s future ruler.
Apart from the main casting of Lucy Baird and Snow, there’s little information regarding the rest of the cast. There is also no much information regarding the streaming rights of the film either. Written by Michael Lesslie, fans are expecting some actors from the previous Hunger Games movies to appear in the prequel too. If ‘The Ballad of Snowbird and Snakes’ will repeat the box office success of the franchise’ previous releases, is something that has to be seen.
