Ignoring Indie Hit The Great Indian Kitchen Is A Lesson For OTTs

By Binged Bureau - Jan 21, 2021 @ 07:01 pm

Recently, a movie from the south gave everyone the desired delight, happiness and satisfaction of a good movie. This was The Great Indian Kitchen, which is a Malayalam language movie, directed by Jeo Baby, starring Nimisha Sajayan and Suraj Venjaramoodu, released by the regional OTT platform NeeStream. The movie since its release is making headlines, and for all the right reasons. In this season of controversies, where on the one side you are seeing people abusing and relentlessly making negative remarks on certain scenes in the newly released web-series, on the other side people are continuously praising how good a movie, “The Great Indian Kitchen” is.

Earlier we reported how the OTT giants refused to stream the movie and the Malayalam OTT later picked it up and streamed it online. It has gained a lot of positive feedback and love from people and even critics everywhere. This has been a real talking point of this month for sure. Twitter went into crazy mode when it came to know that Netflix didn’t even review it but blatantly refused it to not stream. Perhaps now they know what a major loss it has been.

The sad part is that the biggies of the OTT industry want to establish a firm grip in the Indian market but are refusing to stream films and series that aren’t their originals, specifically regional. We all know how big the southern cinema industry is and how they affect the profits of everything they come in contact with. Indian content is not only big in India but most other South-east Asian and Middle East Asian countries also enjoy Indian content a lot too.

Especially countries like Dubai, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and other parts of UAE have very high rates of watching Indian content. Streaming giants miss a big chance when it comes to not airing any Indian content because it is a known fact that they will be well received everywhere. Not only will that increase their grip in Indian markets but markets of other countries too.

That being said, India’s population is spread worldwide, if streaming giants make contents like this available worldwide, then there are high chances that people from Indian or other Southeast Asian descent in other continents besides Asia will become subscribers of the particular platform.

Netflix will be soon releasing their very first Telugu anthology movie, which is a good thing in all aspects. But they should also be promoting and working with other regional filmmakers so that more and more people can relate and get to see the world of cinema this part of the world has to offer. We, as an audience are all in for big budget movies and series but that doesn’t mean the small budget ones could be ignored. This might also become a game changer at some point of time, which then will play a major role in bringing in the required benefits for the companies.
