Disney+ announced last night that it is premiering its phenomenal hit Frozen 2 on 15th March on its streaming platform. The remarkable thing about the premiere is that it is taking place three months ahead of schedule. The movie, which had its theatrical release in November 2019, was originally slated to premiere on Disney+ in June 2020.
The move is a stroke of altruism on the part of the streamer, as well as a case of making the most of an unlikely opportunity. With millions of people shuttered indoors across the globe owing to the Coronavirus pandemic, and cinema halls shut, OTT entertainment is proving to be the lifeline of most people. Schools too have been shut down indefinitely by cautious governments, which means children have to be cooped up indoors with nothing much to do. At such a time, releasing its most popular and keenly-awaited titles is a good idea for Disney+. It will most probably also lead to an uptick in subscribers for the streamer. The goodwill it will mop up from grateful families is like icing on the cake.
“Frozen 2 has captivated audiences around the world through its powerful themes of perseverance and the importance of family, messages that are incredibly relevant during this time, and we are pleased to be able to share this heartwarming story early with our Disney+ subscribers to enjoy at home on any device,” Disney CEO Bob Chapek said in a statement about the decision.
Disney added that the move was intended to provide “families with some fun and joy during this challenging period.”
It definitely is a masterstroke from one of the fastest rising OTT platforms in the world.
