The rapidly spreading Coronavirus pandemic has caused massive losses of time, effort and money to the entertainment industry. The first to be affected by the pandemic are definitely big screen movies, what with quite a few countries shutting down cinema halls.
In India too, cinema halls have been shut down in prominent cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Nagpur, among others. Big ticket movies such as Akshay Kumar’s Sooryavanshi, Dwayne Johnson’s Fast and Furious 9, Disney’s Mulan, and Daniel Craig’s James Bond movie No Time To Die, have already deferred release.
But the hardest hit have been the production of popular shows. The Marvel and Disney+ show, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, had to cancel its Prague shooting schedule due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Another popular show, Riverdale, which was in the process of shooting its season 4, shut down production when a cast/crew member came into contact with a Coronavirus-infected person.
Hit series ‘The Morning Show’, which streams on Apple TV+, has suspended production with immediate effect for a minimum of two weeks. The show, which stars Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, will decide at the end of the two weeks whether to continue with the shutdown or resume production. Another show that has halted shoot is Grey’s Anatomy, which has yet to shoot several remaining episodes of its ongoing Season 16. Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 streams in India on Hotstar Premium.
Netflix’s Grace And Frankie too has halted production of its final season. Orlando Bloom’s Amazon Prime Video series Carnival Row Season 2 has also suspended its ongoing Budapest shoot. European countries have been the hardest hit with Coronavirus outside of China. Bloom posted a video on his Instagram informing fans of the show about returning home to the United States due to halt in shooting. The Amazon Prime Video movie Birds of Paradise has also halted production, six days away from wrap.
Shows such as Netflix’s Russian Doll Season 2 and Apple TV+’s Little America Season 2 that haven’t begun production yet, have delayed the start of their of their shoots.
And in another development, the start of the Indian Premier League has been postponed to April 15th.
