Incredibles 3 has received a highly optimistic update from Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter, who also happens to have helmed some of the most iconic Pixar projects, such as Monsters, Inc., Up, Inside Out, and Soul. In his recent interview with Fandango, Docter confirmed the return of Brad Bird as director for the third chapter in the Incredibles franchise.
While talking with Fandango, Docter revealed that Bird would helm Incredibles 3. Singing praises for his directing abilities and collaboration skills, Docter also revealed that Bird likes to put passion first in all of his works. This is what he said:
“Brad [Bird] is an amazing collaborator. He’s so fiery and passionate. Different people work different ways. He’s a guy who needs a little more time to build up the steam to get the passion and the power going. I think we’re at that point now. And we’re not sharing any details right now, because it’s still pretty malleable in terms of what the story is actually about.”
While Docter did not reveal any plot details about Incredibles 3, he did seem ecstatic about Bird returning to his helming duties for the highly anticipated animated threequel. And he should be! His return is certainly a huge sigh of relief for the franchise’s fanbase, which has been growing in numbers steadily since 2004. Moreover, he is the only director who’s getting his own Pixar threequel to direct in the form of Incredibles 3. The directional duties were shifted to Lee Unkrich from John Lasseter for Toy Story 3. Lasseter himself never directed a third installment of any of his franchises, such as Toy Story and Cars. Docter helmed the first Inside Out entry, whereas Kelsey Mann ended up directing its latest record-breaking sequel.
Both Incredibles movies have turned incredible because Brad Bird himself is an incredible talent (Boy, this sentence is a real stinker. No more wordplay for us!). He is undoubtedly one of the greatest directors of animation. Bird’s distinct style sets him apart from other Pixar directors. He always tries to push the boundaries of animation with his work. His animated projects are visually stunning, with intricate animation, vibrant colours, and imaginative world-building. Apart from focusing on complex and relatable characters, the director also addresses important social issues in his films. He is indeed a true maestro when it comes to the world of animation.
All these facts make Brad Bird the right person to direct Incredibles 3. Although, we may have to wait a bit long to get the threequel as the helmer is currently busy filming Ray Gunn for Skydance Animation and Netflix, which is scheduled to come out in 2026. Stay tuned for more updates.
