India’s entertainment industry is at a turning point. On the surface, it looks impressive because over 550 million people use streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and JioCinema. But all those users bring in just about $2.1 billion each year. That’s far less than countries like South Korea, which has fewer users but earns more.
The good news?
A new report says this can change in a big way over the next five years.
If things keep going the way they are, India’s streaming market could grow to $5 billion. But with smarter moves, that number could go up to $9 billion. And if the industry truly shakes things up by creating more global-quality shows, using better technology, and working closely with international partners, it could hit $15 billion. That’s a possible $6 billion more than what’s on the table now.
The report also points out a big mismatch between what people want and what they’re being offered. For example, 30% of Indian viewers love comedy, but only 10% of premium content focuses on it.
On the other hand, crime and drama are everywhere, even though not everyone wants them. Movies like RRR, Kantara, and KGF 2 have shown that stories rooted in Indian culture can win hearts both at home and abroad.
Another insight?
While India is seen as a mobile-first country, more and more people are now watching content on connected TVs with their families. In just two years, YouTube’s TV viewership in India has grown four times. But most shows are still made for individual mobile users in cities, leaving out a huge audience in small towns and villages.
The report also talks about using AI in production.
Only 24% of Indian studios use AI tools, compared to 76% in the US. Yet, studios that have started using AI say they’ve cut their post-production time by 40%.
In simple terms, India has the talent, the stories, and the audience. What’s needed now is action. The world is ready the question is, is India?
