Indian 2 Is Now In Trouble With The Multiplex Association of India

Some things are better left untouched. The creators of Indian are likely having nightmares every single night after Indian 2 turned out to be one of the biggest disappointments in terms of both hype and quality. With a reported budget of ₹250Cr, the sequel grossed just ₹150Cr, which is astonishingly low.

Initially, when the news broke about a sequel to Indian, fans showered it with love, driven by their nostalgia for the original. And they had every right to feel so. However, what brought Indian 2 to its downfall was the “let’s not change with time” mentality, making the film feel outdated.

Ironically, Indian 2 not only entered theaters quickly, but it was also quick to exit. OTT became its new home, but there was a fundamental problem.

Regarding the Tamil and Telugu dubs, they surprisingly arrived on OTT just four weeks after the theatrical release, while the Hindi dub lasted slightly longer in theaters before coming to Netflix in six weeks. This created a significant issue.

The Multiplex Association of India has taken legal action against the Indian 2 team for breaching OTT release guidelines.

The association mandates an 8-week gap between a film’s theatrical release and its availability on OTT platforms for Hindi films. Producers who fail to comply risk losing access to major multiplex chains like PVR Inox and Cinepolis.

Despite agreeing to these terms, the Indian 2 team violated the agreement by streaming the Hindi version on Netflix ahead of schedule.

The association is determined to enforce these guidelines strictly, aiming to set a precedent that any deviation from the 8-week window will not be tolerated, thereby safeguarding the integrity of theatrical releases in North India.
