Indian author and political analyst Mithun Vijay Kumar has sent a legal notice to Netflix asking them to take down episode 1 of the second season of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ on the platform. In the episode, Rajesh Kuthrapally, one of the main characters, makes some derogatory comments on Indian actress and celebrity Madhuri Dixit.
The notice states that the episode should be taken down because such content is harmful for the society and these can propagate harmful stereotypes against women. Vijay Kumar further states that the content promotes sexism and misogyny. He has warned that if the platform does not take the episode down, legal action will be taken against it.
In a conversation between Sheldon Cooper and Rajesh Kuthrapally, Rajesh compares another actress Aishwarya Rai with Madhuri Dixit and passes some ‘insensitive comments’ as tagged by Kumar. He calls Madhuri a ‘leprous Prostitute’. The episode came out years ago and there were no complaints reported. However, ‘The Big Bang Theory’ is a sitcom and there are many sarcastic moments in the show. The Big Bang Theory is known for its dark humor and unconventional and intelligent way of making people laugh. The comment was solely made for fun, but it also has enough elements to hurt the sentiments of fans. It skipped the observation of fans for so long but again it is coming to headlines once again and gaining a lot of attention. Fans should consider that it is a comedy show and the comment does not mean it and the platform too should keep the sentiments of its audiences in mind.
