Interstellar Soars Again: India’s Unwavering Love For Nolan

The love for Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar has transcended geographical boundaries—even to space (just kidding!). But the way this movie has received such unanimous love and support from fans across the globe is mind-boggling. The same has happened in India, too. In fact, Interstellar has just had the biggest opening weekend ever for a Hollywood re-release.

Nolan has a dedicated fanbase in India. His prominence and cinematic excellence, blended with a hefty dose of nostalgia, have certainly aided Interstellar in earning impressive figures in the country on its re-release.

On Friday, the epic sci-fi drama minted nearly Rs 2.40 crore. It went on to gross Rs 3.25 crore on both Saturday and Sunday, ending the opening weekend at Rs 9 crore.

With this, Interstellar has collected over Rs 50 crore in India so far, which also includes earnings from its original theatrical run in the country. According to analysts, the movie may gross over Rs 15 crore in its opening week, which is a remarkable feat for any Hollywood movie in India—especially on a re-release.

Interstellar was a massive financial success upon its original theatrical run, minting over $681 million globally against its $165 million budget. The film was especially praised for its innovative and original storyline, Nolan’s gripping direction, Hans Zimmer’s iconic musical score, mesmerizing visuals, and phenomenal performances from Hollywood icons Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Matt Damon.

Since its release in 2014, Interstellar has become a key part of pop culture. However, the audience’s love for the film reached new heights in the last two years. As a result, Warner Bros had no alternative but to re-release the movie in theatres. Upon re-release, the movie has grossed over $743 million worldwide.

A massive portion of Nolan’s fanbase became vocal on social media platforms when Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2: The Rule snatched Interstellar’s IMAX screenings in India in early December 2024. Well, it’s been a long wait, but Interstellar has finally given Indian audiences a chance to experience the movie on IMAX screens.

Another factor that has aided Interstellar in earning such impressive figures is the lack of big Bollywood releases in the first two weeks of February. Advait Chandan’s Loveyapa (starring Aamir Khan’s son, Junaid Khan, and Boney Kapoor’s daughter, Khushi Kapoor) is a big movie in terms of its promotional scale and budget (Rs 60 crore). However, the movie itself wasn’t any good, which gave Indian audiences another reason to unanimously reject it, making it a substantial box office failure.

The only movies giving tough competition to Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar are Sanam Teri Kasam (another re-released project, thanks to its diehard fanbase) and Himesh Reshammiya’s Badass Ravi Kumar. Never thought we would mention Nolan and Lord Himesh in the same sentence someday, but here we go…

Don’t take Badass Ravi Kumar lightly, folks. Believe it or not, but this “cinematic masterpiece” breached the Rs 10 crore mark on its fourth day. We are definitely living in crazy times! Stay tuned for more updates.
