Since the release of Bahubali, and its immense success, a different pattern of movies have been seen in the film industry that has now become a new archetype. We can say that Bahubali started a new trend in the film industry that became quite impactful in the box office, hence became a prevalent thing in the industry. This trend was of big budget medieval themed movies with a lot of action and politics as an integral part of the plot.
Bahubali was a milestone in the history of Indian cinema and it created a record earning in the box office. But this initiated a new trend of such movies. Rudhramadevi, Thugs of Hindostan, Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy, Samshera etc. are some of the examples. Many of these movies, like Bahubali, made quite remarkable impact in the box office. Such movies were periodic, often covering some important historical incident or event like Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior or Samshera. This made the movies more likable to the public. The movies were filled with action, drama and moving graphics, like the use of CGI, huge sets etc. this made them more suitable to watch in theatres. The movies also had big names in the lead, this made an extra star appeal to them hence increasing their success rate. As a result, these movies turned out to do massive revenue in the box office and went on to break multiple records.
Though some of the movies were exceptionally good; still many movies were simply imitations of the genre to just make money. This resulted in movies with weak plots and writing, no attention to details, bad direction and worthless hype. Such movies too made profit in the box office, thanks to the big names associated with the movie, which was able to grab a good number of audiences, and gave the collection of a couple hundered crores. Still such movies were called a blunder in the box office, because of the huge budget they boasted. Like Thugs of Hindostan, had a budget of about 300 crores could only made a collection of 335 crores. As the movie had cast some of the biggest names of Bollywood like Amir Khan, Amitabh Bacchan and Katrina Kaif; most of the revenue was spent in making up for the cast. Hence the movie was a huge loss.
Certainly, a new trend has begun in the film industry and tomorrow a new installment of the same trend, Thangalaan will be released. Some of the movies in this trend have been really masterpieces like the Ponniyin Selven series, but most of the movies have been only cheap imitations. Unless the plot is natural and born out of the writer’s creativity, it is futile to make such movies just to earn money.
