Is Being Violent the New Normal in Indian Cinema?

Indian Cinema is flourishing day by day and more films are being produced than ever crossing the marks in box office that was once unthinkable. But when we look at the chart of top grossing movies every year, almost all of them are filled with violence. This leads us to the question whether violent cinema has become the new normal for Indians?

Back in the days we used to have very less amount of violence in movies that too in the form of action scenes. People were not used to movies with serial killers and gruesome murders. But recently due to global exposure of the Indian audience, they became used to movies where violent and gruesome scenes are portrayed pretty normally. Slowly they wanted it in the Indian movies as well. The makers understood this and created such movies which were of course censored. After all, the CBFC even censored Sholay for portraying the death of Gabbar by falling on a nail. Later with the introduction of OTT platforms, the creator became free from the bondage of censorship.

OTT series of the early age were focused on gruesome and violent acts by the characters, slowly this was well received by the audience. Later the movies too shift towards this. CBFC too became lenient looking at the changing mind of Indian audience.

But now we have an era where most of the movies released are violent. If not they are completely light or dealing with a different paradigm. Movies like Animal and Raayan that topped the box office are clear examples of movies that make violent as the new normal for Indians. Now we see every movie trying to portray serial killers, gruesome murders, cannibalism etc. in the name of art and slowly it is becoming more and more normal.

Finally, we are into that phase in the Indian cinema where violent becomes the new normal.
