For the past decade or so, Disney has been facing allegations regarding their lack of experimentation, especially in their animation genre. This monotony has been reflected in the box office performance of films like Wish, which was practically butchered for this reason.
But if we talk about live-action films, things aren’t much different.
Disney mostly sticks to PG content, and while they once excelled in making musicals, that era seems to have passed. Even their golden high school era is almost existing in ruins. Though there are obviously some exceptions like Cruella, where they stepped out of their comfort zone and made things work.
However, Freaky Friday 2 might not offer us that change in taste.
Some prominent media outlets are disclosing the potential plot of the film, and it might not be the best experiment from the house of Disney. Being directed by Nisha Ganatra, the film will be using the overused body swap technique, which, while comedic at times, is too outdated for a movie like this.
In a gender-swapped twist, Lindsay Lohan’s iconic character, Anna Coleman, returns as an adult alongside her mother, Tess, in a new body-swap scenario with two teenage girls. Anna’s daughter, Harper, a witty tomboy, faces challenges as her single mom plans to marry Eric Davis, a British restaurateur.
Eric’s daughter, Lily, clashes with Harper, adding tension as their families merge. Audition scripts reveal a scene where Harper and Lily embody the traits of Anna and Tess, respectively, practically, the same old aura from a plethora of Disney films.
See, if someone can make these silly things work, it is Disney. They definitely have that witchcraft, and if they can advertise it well, Freaky Friday 2 does have some potential. But recently, all we’ve had from Disney is disappointment.
