In case you are a sci-fi movie buff or an ardent cinephile, then chances are high that you must have already seen Neill Blomkamp’s critically acclaimed feature film directorial debut ‘District 9’. Ever since the release of ‘District 9’ back in 2009, there have been talks about the film’s potential sequel.
Some time back, the South African filmmaker had revealed that the screenplay of the sequel to the sci-fi film ‘District 9’ (titled ‘District 10’) was being written by him along with Sharlto Copley and Teri Tatchell. Then last year, ‘District 9’ lead actor Sharlto Copley revealed that the sequel is indeed in the works and he and Neill Blomkamp are working on the sequel’s script. However, there has been no further update since then, leading to speculations whether the eagerly anticipated sequel is moving forward or not.
And now, Neill Blomkamp has given an update of sorts about the prospects of ‘District 10’, but sadly it does not look a very positive one. He has stated in a recent interview (via THR) that “I don’t know if it’s getting made or not. I don’t know if I even want to make that right now, but at some point, down the line, it’ll probably get made.”
Neill Blomkamp’s latest film ‘Gran Turismo’ has just been released in theatres and the commercial success of the sports action movie might brighten the prospects of ‘District 9’ sequel ‘District 10’ in the near future. But that remains to be seen.
‘District 9’ is a one-of-its-kind sci-fi action thriller movie which was adapted from Neill Blomkamp’s own short film ‘Alive in Joburg’. Narrated in found footage filmmaking technique, the movie follows the story of a bureaucrat named Wikus (Sharlto Copley), who is tasked with relocation of an alien race who had found refuge on Earth in an area called District 9. During the task, Wikus is accidentally exposed to a chemical which forces him to take help from a well-intentioned alien, who is planning to escape Earth.
After the film’s release, ‘District 9’ achieved a cult following and the demand for a sequel amongst fans has only grown over these years. As of now, sadly, ‘District 9’ is not streaming anywhere on an Indian OTT platform. But we highly recommend you watch the film on DVD / Blu-Ray in case you can get hold of it somehow.
