Disney+ Hotstar, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are the three main OTT platforms with huge virtual libraries filled with brilliant content which is currently dominating the streaming market in India. Each OTT platform brings unique content to the Indian audience – and that uniqueness has paid off for all three platforms. However, out of the three, Disney+ Hotstar has not been doing so well in the South Indian originals department. Perhaps, the streaming platform should stick with its Hindi original releases which have proved to be successful so far.
As mentioned earlier, each of the above mentioned OTT platforms streams unique content. Netflix has probably the largest virtual library in the world filled with brilliant original films, TV shows, International content and even video games. Amazon Prime Video has been releasing many Indian originals, particularly South Indian films with a lot of success. Disney+ Hotstar has been doing really well with the Hotstar Specials series as well as the streaming of live cricket and football matches on the OTT platform. However, Disney+ Hotstar has been having rotten luck with its Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam direct-to-OTT releases so far.
While we do not know why this is the case, it would be smarter for the streaming platform to concentrate on their upcoming Hindi releases. Because, even though the “Hotstar Specials” have been doing well among their subscribers so far, their direct-to-OTT releases have been tanking among critics and viewers alike. ‘Bhuj: The Pride of India‘ and ‘Atrangi Re‘ are prime examples of this problem. The OTT platform needs to rectify problems caused with one major film industry before it starts to dabble with the South Indian multilingual film industries.
