JioHotstar recently announced that they have crossed 100 million subscribers. The news comes as a matter of great surprise because Hotstar’s situation has badly deteriorated in the last three years. Still, it took a rebirth when JioCinema merged with it.
So, there was a time when Disney+Hotstar used to be the single largest platform in India with more than 50 million subscribers. Even if we clubbed all other major platforms together then they were not close to Disney+Hotstar in terms of subscriber base.
Now after the fall and merger, a new report merged a few days back. JioHotstar has created a new record of being the first Indian OTT platform to reach that level. However, there are a few things that we must consider before considering this data.
This data comes straight after the Champions Trophy and IPL. We know how much Indians love cricket and thus this season, the subscriber base of cricket streaming platforms is the highest.
Secondly, during the launch of JioHotstar, the three-month upgrade to the subscribers of JioCinema was offered at the mere cost of ₹79.
It was a steal deal and many people got their JioHotstar subscription through that.
Naturally, we are seeing a very inflated number of the platform and soon it will reduce after the IPL season.
But all the best to the platform; even reaching this number was no joke.
