Finally, Gangs of Wasseypur is going to join the festival of classic re-releases on August 30. The movie was originally released in the year of 2012. The first part was released in June and it was followed by the second part that was released in August. But the re-release of both the movies is scheduled for the same date. Now, one has to see whether releasing both the parts on the same day will be a good idea or if the makers made a mistake releasing both movies on the same day?
The movies were originally released in two parts as the story was too long to be released in the form of a single movie. The movies failed miserably in the box office, but later with time the movies created a big fanbase among the audience. The film emerged as a cinematic genius and Anurag Kashyap was praised highly for it. The films also proved to be launch pads for many actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi, Vineet Kumar etc. The movie became a cult classic and its popularity grew over time.
As the re-release culture took flight this year, many films that could not do well at the time of release but later were appreciated by people were again given recognition they deserved by being released again on the silver screen. Gangs of Wasseypur too dived in this ocean and is set to be released again. But where the original release had a gap of two months between both the movies, the re-release will feature both the movies on the same day. This can potentially create chaos for the audiences. The systematic release might have put forward a linear path for the audience to watch the first movie and then its sequel, but as both movies will screen at the same time, it will be confusing for the audience as to what to watch. If a person likes the sequel more, he/she won’t bother watching the first movie. This will also cause a lack of sales for the movie compared to the potential they had.
Hence the release of both the movies will obviously do more harm than good for the franchise. The same tactic of keeping a gap between the release of both movies could have been a much better option.
