Is Uncharted The Latest Game Adaptation Doomed To Fail?

The highly anticipated Tom HollandMark Wahlberg starrer, ‘Uncharted‘, is making its way to theatres in a couple of weeks. The film will be the latest Hollywood feature to be adapted from a successful gaming franchise and many are already expecting this movie to fail. Sure, the film will likely make a lot of money in theatres, but it will not be turning the heads of any major critic, anytime soon (or at least, that’s what many expect). Is the film truly doomed to fail or is the stigma from past film releases clouding our judgement for this upcoming feature?

Well, “stigma” is a major factor that is acting as a dark raincloud over this film’s release. Other highly anticipated film adaptations from popular game franchises such as ‘Prince of Persia’, ‘Assassin’s Creed’ and ‘Mortal Kombat’ haven’t faired well with critics either, even if they did alright in the box office. Also, the promotions behind ‘Uncharted’ doesn’t really fill many with a lot of anticipation, especially after a couple of plot-holey-cut scenes. The film has a few saving graces, however.

Luckily, the plot is still under wrap, despite the multiple trailers, clips and teasers. Sure, we know the premise of the movie, however, there is a lot more that we do not know about the plot of the film. Another positive addition to the film is its lead, Tom Holland, who has had an incredible few years so far. Still, these are not good enough factors to determine is a film will be successful in theatres or not. The aforementioned ‘Prince of Persia’ and ‘Assassin’s Creed’ had these factors and they still failed to turn the head of any critics worth their salt. There has only been one proper game adaptation created so far, and it is Netflix’s brilliant cyberpunk animated action series, ‘Arcane’. And the TV show is going to be quite tough to beat.

‘Uncharted’ will premiere in theatres next month on February 18th 2022.
