Rajanikanth’s much anticipated theatrical ‘Jailer’ is finally releasing on the 10th of August and fans are overjoyed. But the producers and distributors seem to make a grave mistake.
The film was announced in February last year and it has been the subject of huge hype since then. But now audiences are divided over whether it will be worth it to pay so much to watch a Rajinikanth film. The first day first show tickets are priced between Rs 800 and 1400.
Rajinikanth is long past his prime and yet he enjoys an enviable and grand fan base. He has worshippers who would do anything at all to watch the first day first show of Rajinikanth’s movies. But will regular moviegoers be willing to pay this much for ‘Jailer’?
Exploiting the huge fandom by putting up such high prices is very irrational. They could have been more pragmatic by putting up a moderate price range for tickets so that a larger portion of audience could go to watch the movie. It is true that for many fans the amount is nothing to have a Rajinifying experience, but there are many moviegoers who will not find it comfortable enough to pay 1400 to watch a Rajinikanth movie.
Rajinikanth is not a ‘divine film persona’ for the audiences of this generation he was for the previous one. Audiences have matured and grown a taste for more artsy films, thanks to OTT. It is a blunderous overestimation to think they will flock around theaters and pay 1400 for a mass commercial.
