Jeffrey Wright, who portrays Bernard in the epic sci-fi web series, ‘Westworld’, reminded us that the brilliant series is still not done and there is more to come. While the actor posted a picture on Instagram, which had a simple nameplate with the word “Bernard” written on it, the ominous caption underneath the picture which read, “Good morning… Old friend”, brought chills down our spines (as we except, it did yours, if you are a fan). This signified (at the very least), the beginning of film production for season 4 of ‘Westworld’ – but after the reception of the previous season, is ‘Westworld’ doomed for a “Game of Thrones type ending”?
Let us explain.
When ‘Westworld’ first came into our lives 5 years ago, it was a brilliant work of art. The first season tackles many important questions regarding the human psyche, true freedom, free will as well as the task of creating artificial intelligence from scratch. Never truly sticking to just one genre, this season brought about a new wave of intelligent writing, that had not been seen before. It was only bettered by the second season of the same show, which many thought peaked with its first season. By then, many thought this show could do no wrong.
Fast forward to 2020 and the third season has just come out. This new season is good for sure, but it was not at the level of its predecessors. Which is a worrying thing. Many shows, no matter how great, that peaked early, have rarely returned to their original form and had only declined from there. In the case of truly brilliant shows like ‘Game of Thrones‘ and ‘Arrested Development’, the drop was even greater, which made the show seem much lesser than what it actually was. Are we looking at the decline of another such show in ‘Westworld’?
Of course, season 4 of ‘Westworld’ is not the last one, at least it has not been officially announced yet. With the series still going strong and loved by many, this show has the potential to remain relevant for a few more seasons if it needs to, especially with its above-average writing and thought-provoking concepts. But the creator’s shouldn’t rule out this possibility and need to tread carefully with this upcoming season – for one wrong move and we could be moving into “cancelled territory”.
Three seasons of ‘Westworld’ are currently available for streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. The fourth season of the show has started filming and is expected to release by May 2022.
