Ishaan Khatter’s highly anticipated war drama film ‘Pippa’ has decided to skip theatres and release directly on streaming. Streaming giant Prime Video has grabbed the film for direct to digital release on its platform. It being Ishaan Khatter’s birthday today, Prime Video chose today to make the ‘Pippa’ announcement on social media.
Along with announcing the direct digital release of Pippa on Prime Video, the streamer also revealed the release date and trailer for the film. ‘Pippa’ will premiere on Prime Video worldwide on 10th November, 2023. The movie is jointly produced Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP Films and Siddharth Roy Kapur’s Roy Kapur Films.
The trailer for ‘Pippa’ gives us ample hint of the story of the film. Set in the backdrop of the 1971 India – Pakistan war, the film is based on true events that took place during the war for the liberation of Bangladesh. It centres around real-life war hero Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta of the 45th Cavalry Tank Squadron, who fought in the 1971 war, along with his siblings; and lived to tell the tale in his book, ‘The Burning Chaffees’.
‘Pippa’ will tell the coming-of-age story of young Balram Singh Mehta, and how he rose up to the challenge of facing off against the Pakistanis on the battleground. Interestingly, the title of the film ‘Pippa’ refers to the Russian amphibious war tank called the PT-76 (Palavushi Tanka) deployed by the 45th Cavalry for the first time in the 1971 war. The tank was affectionately called “Pippa”, which is the Hindi word for a tin can used to store ghee. The amphibious tank floated on water like an empty ghee tin, hence the name.
Pippa played a crucial role in the defeat of the Pakistani soldiers in the Battle of Garibpur, led by Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta. Ishaan Khatter plays Brigadier Mehta in Pippa. Mrunal Thakur plays his sister in the film, while Soni Razdan plays his mother. Priyanshu Painyulli also has a crucial role in Pippa. The film is directed by Raja Krishna Menon, who’s earlier directed Akshay Kumar’s Airlift.
