ALTBalaji and ZEE5 have an interesting web series coming up, one of its most ambitious, one very close to content queen Ekta Kapoor’s heart. It’s called ‘It Happened In Calcutta’, and it’s about to release very soon on both streaming platforms. As soon as Valentine’s Day 2020, that is 14th February!
It Happened In Calcutta is a period drama set in the heady days of the swinging sixties, and as the title suggests, in the Calcutta of those days. Flower children, the sexual awakening amongst the youth, political upheavals, all played a part in shaping the Calcutta of the sixties.
It Happened In Calcutta is the compelling love story of young, aspiring doctor Kusum and college stud Ronobir, which kicks off when the two meet at the Calcutta Medical College, where both are studying to be doctors. How their love story is affected by the events of those times, and whether it stands the test of the massive social, cultural and political upheavals, is what lies at the centre of the narrative.
Debutant Naghma Rizwan plays Kusum, and Karan Kundrra plays Ronobir, besides an ensemble cast comprising Miss India Gujarat 2018 Anushka Luhar, Coral Bhamra, Shourya Lathar, Riya Deepsi, Aman Vashishth and Ashmit Kharbanda.
Ken Ghosh, past master at creating absorbing youth-centric content, directs It Happened In Calcutta.
Apparently, Naghma Rizwan, the girl who plays Kusum, was selected for the role after 2.5 years of searching and over 300 auditions across India and the globe. The release of the show in February will mark two back to back releases for fan favorite Karan Kundrra on OTT, the other being ALTBalaji’s Dil Hi Toh Hai Season 3, which premieres on 27th January on ALTBalaji.
It Happened In Calcutta drops on ALTBalaji and ZEE5 on 14th February 2020. Stand by for the trailer, which should release anytime soon.
