We have been hearing reports about this all year since its announcement in Feb that Tom Cruise and Doug Liman will make a space related movie- IN SPACE. It has now been confirmed that both the actor and director duo will go to space as part of the Space-X Axiom Space-1 mission thanks to a twitter post by Space Shuttle Almanac.
The twitter post showed the manifest of the entire mission containing crew from multiple countries that are part of the International mission. But on a closer look at a part of the chart which reads ‘SpaceX Crew Dragon’, it has three names on it (two very famous ones) – Space-X pilot – Lopez Algeria, Tourist 1 – Tom Cruise and Tourist 2 – Doug Liman. There is still one open spot remaining in the craft for another tourist to join/claim.
Space-X Dragon was Elon Musk’s vision to take tourists into space and create a legitimate business model for the service. Both Tom Cruise and Doug Liman are going to be few of the first people to go into space (along with an extra passenger) through Space-X, without any multiple years of special knowledge or training which was previously deemed necessary for the travel. Each seat on the shuttle is worth 55 million dollars.
The launch of the spacecraft will be in October next year, which will be a 6 month mission in the International Space Station (ISS). It is still unclear if both Cruise and Liman are going next year for just scoping out the ‘new frontier’ for cinematography, or it will be straight to the ‘first-of-it’s kind’ production, but one thing is for certain, Tom Cruise is going to find his ‘space-legs’.
Cruise is teaming up with Elon Musk and NASA in this venture to create NASA’s first narrative film. There hasn’t been any other plot suggestions or story-lines available for the public yet. In July, it was announced that Universal will also back the 200 million dollar budget film as well.
