Last year, it was announced that globally popular veteran actor and martial artist Jackie Chan was all set for his return for a brand-new Karate Kid movie, which is slated for a theatrical release on 13th December 2024. Jonathan Entwistle (‘The End of the F***ing World’, ‘I Am Not Okay With This’) will be directing the new Karate Kid film. It also features Ralph Macchio – the lead actor of the original Karate Kid movie which came out in 1984.
And as per the latest update, the makers have finalized the lead actor of the new Karate Kid movie. After a massive search across the globe, Ben Wang will be essaying the titular role in the yet-untitled Karate Kid movie. Previously, he featured as the lead alongside Michelle Yeoh in the action-adventure Disney+ series ‘American Born Chinese’.
As of now, the plot details for ‘The Karate Kid’ new movie are being kept under the wraps. The basic plot will ostensibly revolve around a teenage boy (played by Ben Yang), who relocates from China to the East Coast and begins to train in martial arts with the help of a mentor(s).
The parent 1984 movie ‘The Karate Kid’ has gained a cult following over the years. The hit martial arts drama featured Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso in the role of the underdog protagonist and his adversary Johnny Lawrence was played by William Zabka.
The success of the first film resulted in three sequels and the 2010 Jackie Chan film. Later, the Karate Kid universe was given a new lease of life after the arrival of the Cobra Kai spin-off/sequel series where tables turned as the goings-on are also narrated from Johnny Lawrence’s point of view in a setting where he becomes the underdog. The upcoming new Karate Kid movie was announced following Cobra Kai’s phenomenal streaming success. Let’s see whether the new film can live up to the same standards of that of the parent film and the ‘Cobra Kai’ series.
