James Gunn Gives Production Update on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3

Helmer James Gunn has revealed the current production status of MCU’s upcoming project, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. The prominent filmmaker is well-known for answering fan questions frequently via his Twitter handle. One fan asked the director about a possible fourth entry in the GOTG franchise. Here is what Gunn replied:

“We finished shooting the Holiday Special this week (out this Christmas). We finish shooting Vol 3 in about a week (out in May).”

We know that Marvel is currently busy promoting Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder. And GOTG Vol 3 is expected to hit the theatres in May next year. Plus, James Gunn has expressed his desire to take a break from the franchise via a tweet last month. A user requested the director to join the Star Wars universe, to which he responded: “I’m finishing a Guardians trilogy. That’s enough space opera for me at this moment.”

It seems clear that Gunn has no plans to work on a possible GOTG fourth entry in future. Additionally, he has disclosed that the forthcoming Guardians instalment will be more emotional and sad in comparison to the first two entries. He has filmed it like his last venture with Marvel. That’s why his decision makes sense considering the outstanding work he has done for Marvel Studios over the years. He deserves a break from the Guardians franchise to focus on other projects.

Apart from his upcoming superhero projects, Gunn is also busy developing an animated film for Warner Bros, Coyote vs. Acme, with John Cena, Will Forte, and Lana Condor in the cast.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will hit the theatres on May 5, 2023, and the GOTG Holiday Special will come out in December this year. The latter will be released directly on the Disney+ streaming service. Stay tuned for more updates.
