James Gunn May Never Work With Marvel Again

James Gunn has opened up about the odds of working with Marvel Studios again. He currently serves as the co-chief of DC Studios. Plus, he is busy filming his next directional feature, Superman: Legacy, starring David Corenswet.

More than a year has passed since Peter Safran and James Gunn were elected as the co-heads of DC Studios. The latter recently responded to a fan’s comment on Threads about the possibility of returning to Marvel. This is what Gunn replied:

“I could not either physically or legally. I couldn’t possibly fit in any other projects. My plate is pleasantly full.”

James Gunn’s first project for Marvel Studios was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 (2014), which defied all expectations and emerged as a critical and commercial success, earning over $770 million globally. The sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), surpassed the first entry in terms of collection by minting over $860 million worldwide.

However, Marvel Studios terminated their contract with Gunn in 2018 after some of the director’s controversial tweets surfaced online. This scenario allowed Warner Bros to hire the GOTG director for The Suicide Squad and the Peacemaker series. Both projects received outstanding reviews from critics and fans, forcing Warner Bros to look at Gunn as their new spearheader for rebooting the DCEU. As a result, we now have the DCU under the collaborative leadership of Gunn and Safran.

It makes sense why Warner Bros wants to hold on to James Gunn. The helmer’s filmography is enough to prove his outstanding and creative filmmaking skills. He was able to direct GOTG 3 as he was not appointed as DC Studio’s co-head when he started filming the third GOTG entry. Based on all the things mentioned above, it seems like we may not see James Gunn working for Marvel again. Stay tuned for more updates.
