James Gunn’s upcoming action comedy thriller ‘The Suicide Squad’ dropped an epic R-Rated trailer on the official Youtube channel of HBO Max. And he holds nothing back. The trailer features the prequel film’s Harley Quinn, Amanda Waller and Rick Flag but also new additions such as Bloodsport, King Shark and Peacemaker. We only get a few glimpses of the others and the action within the film, but it does look promising. Finally, a DC film we can whole-heartedly get behind! Check out the trailer at the end of this article.
After the lukewarm reception of Zack Snyder’s ‘Man of Steel’ and the overwhelming negative-to-mixed response of ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’, Warner Bros. Pictures were ready to move away from the dark themes of the Snyder films. They brought on David Ayer to create a more humorous spin-off featuring prominent DC characters such as Harley Quinn, Amanda Waller, Joker, Deadshot, among others. And when the trailer featuring Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ dropped, we knew we were in for something different. But Ayer has never really made action comedy. Yes, the action thrillers he has written or directed have comedic and absurd scenes like in the movies ‘Fury’, ‘Street Kings’ and ‘Training Day’, but they cannot be called action comedies like ‘Shazam’ or ‘Men in Black’.
Then, well… you know the rest. Ayer made a cut and showed it to the Warner Bros. Execs, who then made cuts and edits to the final product, brought back the actors for extensive re-shoots and released the 2016 shit-show we are now familiar with. With that, we knew DC was doomed in the hands of Warner Bros. Eventually Wonder Woman which released in 2017 did try to change our minds somewhat but with Joss Whedon’s ‘Justice League’, we knew Warner Bros. Pictures has dug a deep hole for themselves and it will take a miracle to pull them out of it.
With the release of ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’, we know that Warner Bros. Pictures are finally listening to the DC fans and the involvement of James Gunn, we know we are getting a proper action comedy. When James Gunn was handed the directorial role to create the Superhero team up movie ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, the writer-director went on to create one of the profitable film franchises in the MCU. The absurdity as well as the action within the film thrilled audiences around the golbe and with his success in the second film of the same franchise, he became the obvious choice for a reboot/ sequel for the absurd ‘Suicide Squad’.
And Gunn has gone all out. The trailer is extremely funny, raunchy and gory all at the same time and we can’t get enough of it. And John Cena owns within his limited screen time in the trailer, giving us no room for doubt as to why there is an HBO Max spin-off series featuring his character Peacemaker, currently in the making. He has also brought on his ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ acting collaborators to feature in prominent roles including his brother Sean Gunn, Michael Rooker and even Sylvester Stallone and they all look promising. We can’t wait to watch ‘The Suicide Squad’ and hope you guys are as excited about it as we are.
James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ releases in theaters and on HBO Max (for a month) on August 6th 2021.
