James Wan Is Open To Helm Aquaman 3 Despite Backlash

Given the significant changes DC Studios has gone through under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, the fate of the Aquaman franchise looks foggy. Still, director James Wan is optimistic about helming a third Aquaman entry in future.

In his recent interview with Empire, Wan expressed his desire to helm a third Aquaman project.

“I haven’t directed a third movie [in a series] before, so I’d be open to doing another [Aquaman] if I got the same freedom I’ve had on these first two. I’m not sure what direction [James Gunn and Peter Safran] are going in, though, so who knows? I’ve learned to never say never.”

While Wan’s optimism about helming another Aquaman entry looks intriguing, it is more likely that the superhero franchise will get rebooted. Variety has already dropped a bomb on DC fans, revealing that Gunn and Safran’s DCU will have new actors for the Justice League team. Additionally, rumours about Jason Momoa playing Lobo in a future DCU project are running wild on social media.

Based on what we know so far, it is safe to assume that Wan may get a chance to direct the third Aquaman entry, but someone else may end up playing the “King of the Seven Seas” in his next directional.

Despite the ongoing backlash for the upcoming DCEU instalment, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, we should not ignore the odds of Aquaman 3 happening in future. The first Aquaman film (2018) was the most successful DCEU entry, earning well over $1.1 billion globally. If the forthcoming Jason Momoa starrer somehow manages to defy all the odds, then Aquaman 3’s path to theatres will get more clear. Let’s see what happens!

Directed by James Wan and made on a budget of $205 million, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will arrive in theatres worldwide on December 20. Stay tuned for more updates.
