The Covid-19 global pandemic of 2020 had been horrific. But the second wave of the Coronavirus has taken the entire country by surprise and many states have been undergoing various states of emergencies, lockdowns, etc. so as to bring back the rapidly increasing number of Covid-19 cases to manageable levels. This has been more true in the case of Japan who is currently undergoing its “fourth wave” of the Covid-19 pandemic. With major Japanese cities like Tokyo, Kyoto and Hokkaido all going into various states on lockdown, this has had a negative impact on the amount of anime released from the major animation studios (Obviously).
This has been a trying time for everyone and of course, health and safety are the most important statutes at the present moment, and not entertainment. That said, we are talking about OTT news here and that’s what we are going to be focusing on for this article.
Tokyo and Kyoto are home to a few of the biggest and best animation studios, around the world. With these cities undergoing lockdown till the end of this month (May 2021), we will be waiting for many of the upcoming animation projects, for some time now. This also includes the various animation projects that OTT giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Crunchyroll, Disney + among others have tied up with these companies.
Of course, luckily for us (anime fans), a lot of major projects, most of which are expected to drop by August have already been made and produced by these companies and they have already reached the major OTT platforms. But with Japan’s coronavirus condition rivalling our own, there is a very good chance we will not be seeing any projects coming out of the country – be it live-action or animated. We hope the situation gets better for them and us, real soon.
