Malayalam Cinema has seen unpredictable blockbusters this year. When star vehicles failed to create a wave at the box-office, films that came by with no pre-built hype owned screens like none other. Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey would be the biggest gainer in this list if we were to make one. This Basil Joseph and Darshana Rajendran starrer ‘ Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey‘ hit the screens on 28th October and the reception is overwhelming to say the least. The film has been gaining unanimous gargantuan positive reception from audience and critics alike for its humour and social messaging.
For non Malayalis who are interested in the film but couldn’t watch it at the theatres and for the natives who missed the furore at the theatres, we have you covered. The digital rights of the film were bagged by Disney+Hotstar and it will stream from December 22nd onwards, the streamer announced today.
Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey, written and directed by Vipin Das, focuses on the life of Jaya, a girl who grew up in a very typical lower middle class family. The film zooms in on the amount of unfairness in a woman’s life that’s taken for granted, both before and after marriage. The film focusses on the patriarchal norms that kept her out of a successful career at home and then at her suppressive husband and in-laws’ post her marriage. The film has also treated domestic violence and its gravity with a tinge of comedy more so to deliver the message far and wide. Precisely, Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey takes what The Great Indian Kitchen said notches higher.
The actors Darshana and Basil were also heavily praised for their performances. Aju Varghese, Manju Pillai and Noby Marcose co-star the duo. This social comedy drama is The Great Indian Kitchen in a more accessible package. And quite unarguably, the film will travel far and wide like the former or even more due to its humour.
The film is still a running riot at the box-office exceptionally and is expected to do much better on streaming. Quite expectedly the hype for the theme of the film will also be on the lines of The Great Indian Kitchen and Thappad. Watch Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey on December 22nd on Disney+Hotstar!
