The original Telugu version of Jersey turned out to be an average grosser at the box office. But Nani’s mesmerising performance and Gowtam Tinnanuri’s top-notch direction made it an instant cult classic. It even bagged the National Award for the best feature film. Soon after its release, the buzz of its remake started flooding social media. And we saw Shahid Kapoor grabbing the lead role.

Jersey (2019): A Little Throwback
Again, we like to point out that Nani was sensational in the original Jersey movie. It turned out to be his career-best performance. His role as an over-aged batsman, Arjun, won the hearts of the viewers. He is determined to win an official Indian cricket team jersey for his son. His love for his son inspires him again to represent his former Ranji team. He delivers some outstanding knocks and improves his chances of getting selected in the Indian team. Additionally, he wins the love of his wife back.
However, Arjun loses the battle against a terrible heart disease and dies after finishing a Ranji Trophy’s final match. But his son gets his Indian jersey as he gets selected for the national team after delivering top-class performances.
Will Shahid Kapoor Recreate Nani’s Charm?
Tinnanuri is helming the upcoming Jersey remake. He also directed the original Telugu version. So, we should not expect a different plot in the upcoming remake. However, we may see some minor changes in it according to the traditional Bollywood feel.
As for Shahid, he will feel the pressure of donning the lead role. His performance as Kabir Singh in the Arjun Reddy remake impressed the majority of the Indian masses, particularly the young male generation of India. But the movie also received a lot of backlash for its heavy misogynistic tone. Yet, Kapoor gained the stardom and success he needed to save his career.
Will the forthcoming Jersey remake cement Shahid Kapoor as one of Bollywood’s top earners? We can answer this one after the film’s release. But considering his Kabir Singh fame and insane acting skills, he seems like the perfect choice to portray the character of Arjun. Projects like Kaminey, Haider, Udta Punjab, Padmaavat, and Kabir Singh (of course) have helped tarnish his image of a chocolate boy.
What Do We Know About Jersey’s Remake So Far?
Alongside Shahid Kapoor, we will see Mrunal Thakur, Pankaj Kapoor, Shishir Sharma, Sharad Kelkar, and young Ronit Kamra on the screen. It will dispatch in theatres on December 31 this year. Allu Arjun’s father, Allu Aravind, is one of the producers of the project.
