Last year, Jio Cinema had aggressively reinvented its content portfolio: right from streaming the massively popular IPL 2023 cricket tournament for free to acquiring premium HBO titles like ‘Succession’ and ‘House of the Dragon’, and later Peacock and Paramount+ global content, etc. Now, let’s see how many of the titles which streamed during the month of January 2024 clicked with the audience.
We have compiled a list of the popular titles which were released on Jio Cinema in December along with their ‘Hit’, ‘Semi-Hit’, ‘Miss’ or ‘Super-Hit’ status. ‘Hit’ implies good title acquisition (based on popularity and/or critical reception), ‘Miss’ signifies a not-so-good title acquisition, ‘Semi-Hit’ signifies a not-too-bad / not-too-good title acquisition, and ‘Super-Hit’ implies a highly successful title acquisition by Jio Cinema (one bonus ‘Hit’ point given for ‘Super-Hit’ titles with total no. of titles remaining as per actual and half hit point given to ‘Semi-Hit’ titles).

Licensed Films
In the month of January 2024, no major Indian licensed film title was released on the OTT platform. And that’s the problem with the streaming service. After making its presence felt in a big way in mid-2023, the performance has been rather inconsistent. The OTT giant needs to not acquire big-ticket Indian films like the way Netflix is doing these days (with Animal, Salaar etc). Just one popular foreign film ‘Blue Beetle’ was released in January, and it was able to attract its target audience.
Web Series
On the web series front, in the month of January for Jio Cinema, no original Indian web series was released on the OTT platform.
Direct-to-OTT Films
As mentioned above, in the month of January 2024, Jio Cinema had no direct-to-OTT Indian films which were released on the OTT platform. This is another segment which needs a big boost. When Shahid Kapoor’s ‘Bloody Daddy’ released last year, it created a lot of buzz. But after that, it has been a dull period for the OTT platform in terms to direct-to-OTT movie releases.
Sports
The ongoing five match test series against England started streaming on the Jio Cinema OTT platform in January and that too for free. After the first test, the next four test matches are scheduled to be played on 2nd to 6th February, 15th to 19th February, 23rd to 27th February, and 7th to 11th March. So, the sports segment did well for Jio Cinema.
Reality Shows
Like the last few months, the seventeenth season of the immensely popular ongoing reality show Bigg Boss once again turned out to be a Super-Hit for Jio Cinema in December. This season too is being hosted by superstar Salman Khan and the grand finale was held on 28th January. Munawar Faruqui was the winner of Bigg Boss 17.
Content Hubs
As you know, Jio Cinema houses foreign content hubs namely Peacock, Paramount+, and HBO on its OTT platform. The foreign content hub portfolio for the month was dominated by mainly two foreign shows – ‘True Detective Season-4’ and ‘Ted’ and both these shows have received fantastic reviews from critics so far.
So, overall, there were four ‘Semi-Hits’, two ‘Misses’, four ‘Hits’, and one ‘Super-Hit’ for Jio Cinema for the month of January 2024. The main highlight which dominated the month of January once again on Jio Cinema was the Peacock / HBO content hubs and ‘Bigg Boss 17’.
Jio Cinema January 2024 Success Score = 73% = 73/100
