You might be aware that Jio in a partnership with HBO will host most of the shows on Jio Cinema. Earlier Disney+Hotstar had the luxury of offering its audience HBO shows. But from March 31 onwards, Indians couldn’t have the luxury of watching those international shows.
But now the tables are turned. Mukesh Ambani‘s Viacom spent a total of whooping ₹1000 crores to stream the HBO shows. It is an extremely expensive deal in comparison to the subscription fee Jio Voot will ask. But anyways, it is good for the instantaneous benefit of people.
Interestingly, the deal was signed with Warner Bros. Discovery that includes originals from HBO Originals, HBO as well as Warner Bros. content.
Sadly, the collaboration is not long term like Disney+Hotstar. The deal will last only 3 years.
Amazon Prime Video in a one-year deal with Warner Bros. Discovery A
..offers a slate of 11 HBO Max Original series and 10 HBO Max original features for one year.
This move will most likely make Jio Voot one of the most prominent OTT platforms in India which earlier used to be sidelined by both audience and market.
It would take a considerable time for them to build a subscriber base that would slowly tune in due to IPL, the HBO deal, and also, the massive slate of 100 projects at Jio Studios.
