Jio TV+’s Arrival Intensifies The Streaming Platforms Vs Traditional Cable TV Debate

Reliance has announced the Jio TV+, a set top box that caters to 12 OTT platforms including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ Hotstar, Voot, SonyLIV, Zee5, Lionsgate Play, JIoCinema, Shemaroo, JioSaavn, YouTube and Eros Now.

The OTT platform will offer an interactive and easy access to OTT content without the hassle of multiple log-ins into different streaming platforms. The USP of the new service is that it will make content accessible and easy to watch by separating it into categories like entertainment, movies, web series, Live TV, kids, music and sport. It will also have interactive features such as voice command and participation polls for reality TV shows. The Jio Glass is another product pushing the boundaries of digital interaction by using 3D avatars, holographic content and video conferencing features.

This announcement has come at a time when users are increasingly choosing not to subscribe to any streaming platform instead of paying for the expensive costs of each one per month just to access the scattered content available on each. Although international platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, MUBI etc have significantly reduced their prices to make it more suitable for Indian markets, it still leaves a vast market in tier 2 and tier 3 cities who won’t subscribe to more than 1 platform at any given time.

On top of that, digital piracy is a very big issue that these platforms have to face in India which can be due to the high cost or the number of services available.

Streaming platforms have been competing with traditional cable TV in recent years but now in a twist of fate Jio TV+ has bundled up these contemporary services and presented them on a platter eerily similar to their dying competition – broadcast TV.

The problem for paying for the up-keep of numerous platforms is solved at the same time access to the digital pool of content will increase tremendously with this move which might lead to confusion in choosing what to watch but will ultimately be a benefit for users and platforms alike.

The entertainment industry is reshaping and adapting itself to the current scenario to become accessible and cheap for the untapped market left in India.
