JioHotstar’s Comeback: Spy Thriller Joins Special Ops

JioHotstar has announced the release of Salakaar (under the banner of Hotstar Specials), an upcoming high-octane spy action thriller. The series, inspired by true events, unfolds across two timelines, following a young Indian spy whose secret mission reveals shocking truths and national secrets. It also delves into the story of a highly decorated spymaster who, through sheer determination and vital intelligence, neutralises enemy threats to protect the nation’s security.

Speaking of Hotstar Specials, it seems like this department at JioHotstar is on a roll right now. Currently, platform users are enjoying (with a bit of a painful wait every week) the weekly episodes of Criminal Justice Season 4, starring Pankaj Tripathi. Its final episode will premiere on July 3.

Soon after the completion of Criminal Justice S4, users will get to enjoy Special Ops 2 (Season 2, slated to release on July 11), led by Kay Kay Menon as fan-favourite Himmat Singh.

The hype for Special Ops 2 is real and substantial. If it actually turns out to be good, it could bring massive viewership to JioHotstar during the second half of July.

While we have a short announcement video for Salakaar (which doesn’t reveal its release date), according to some online reports and rumours, the spy thriller series could arrive on JioHotstar on August 15. If that’s the case, July–August 2025 could potentially turn out to be prosperous for the streamer.

The last two dramas under the Hotstar Specials banner, Kull: The Legacy of the Raisingghs and Hai Junoon!, received a lukewarm reception from both audiences and critics — which is why the release of Special Ops 2, along with Salakaar, could restore some of the lost momentum for JioHotstar in the upcoming 2–3 months.

Speaking of Salakaar, the show is leveraging a perennially popular genre in India. It could strengthen JioHotstar’s portfolio and drive massive viewership. Stay tuned for more updates.
