Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘Napoleon’ Gets Digital Release In India

Historical drama film ‘Napoleon’ hit theatres on November 22, 2023. Directed by stellar filmmaker Ridley Scott, the film did average business at the box office, and garnered mixed reviews from critics and audiences. Most viewers praised the battle sequences and performances in ‘Napoleon’, but panned the film for its pacing, tone, and historical inaccuracies. Interestingly, Napoleon received mostly negative reviews in France, the country of origin of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, on whose life the film is based on.

Now, two months after the theatrical release of ‘Napoleon’, the film is finally available to watch online, albeit in the form of paid video-on-demand (PVOD), i.e. on rental. Napoleon has been released on digital platforms worldwide, including in India. Indian film enthusiasts can rent Napoleon on rental platforms such as BookMyShow, Prime Video Rental Store, YouTube Movies, and Google Movies. The one-time rent for Napoleon is a steep ₹499. The movie is available for rent in English and Hindi.

Ridley Scott’s dramatic historical-epic film ‘Napoleon’ follows the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte as he embarks on a lengthy French campaign of conquest. The film also focuses on his relationship with Josephine, his Empress and the love of his life, a relationship that was equal parts romantically intense and self-destructive. The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon and Vanessa Kirby as Joséphine.

Besides Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby, Napoleon features Tahar Rahim, Ben Miles, Ludivine Sagnier, Matthew Needham, Catherine Walker and Anna Mawn, among others, in pivotal roles. The film is directed and produced by Ridley Scott, and written by David Scarpa.

As for the regular SVOD streaming release of ‘Napoleon’, since it is an Apple Original film, it will begin streaming on Apple TV Plus as part of regular subscription-based OTT. There’s no Apple TV Plus release date for Napoleon yet, but it should be around the beginning of February.
