During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Russo brothers discussed Robert Downey Jr.’s role as Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. While staying tight-lipped on plot specifics, Joe Russo revealed that Downey Jr. is dedicating himself to a rigorous preparation process for his MCU debut as the iconic villain.
Joe Russo: “It’s a very intense process developing the character. He’s so immersed in it. He is so dialled in. [Downey’s] writing backstory, costume ideas … I think he just loves really rich, three-dimensional characters and I think he sees a real opportunity here with that character.”
The Russo brothers’ comments reveal that RDJ is meticulously preparing for his Doctor Doom debut, understanding the character’s crucial role in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga and the need for a powerful first impression in Avengers: Doomsday.
However, it should be taken into consideration that Downey Jr. is not one of the official screenwriters for Doomsday. As of now, only Stephen McFeely holds that role.
