Director Chad Stahelski is still interested in making more John Wick films after the events of Chapter 4, released in March this year. The fourth entry seemingly killed off Baba Yaga, but the director’s enthusiasm about bringing the iconic hitman back to life teases that fans may get a fifth entry in the future. Although, a lot will depend upon the story.
In a recent interview with Inverse, Stahelski talked in great detail about the odds of John Wick 5 happening. This is what he said:
“I have notebooks and notebooks of s–t behind me, John Wicks 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. We have ideas for days. We just don’t have the story locked. I have no interest in doing the cash grab of bringing John Wick back for something. Is he a character I like? Of course! And if I did a couple of John Wick movies, great. Keanu would do one again in a second if we had a good story. We leave that open-minded. I know that the studio would love us to say we have another one.”
We know for sure that John Wick 5 won’t come out without a good story. But here’s the main point. Do we really need a fifth JW installment? The protagonist has killed hundreds of men in all four films, and he finally finds peace in Chapter 4. His death seemed meaningful, given the struggles he endured all his life. But we do not know if he is actually dead or not. Stahelski may resurrect him in the next JW project. But Wick needs a solid story to give some sort of meaning to his rebirth.
However, many fans do not want a fifth JW entry as they believe that John’s arc was perfectly concluded in Chapter 4.
Apart from Keanu Reeves’ films, the John Wick franchise also has The Continental, which opened to a muted critical response, and the upcoming spinoff Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas. Stay tuned for more updates.
