The first spinoff project in the John Wick’s franchise, Ballerina, has received a release date window from Lionsgate. It stars Ana de Armas in the leading role of Rooney, a ballerina-turned-assassin who searches for the murderers of her family. In Chapter 3, the character was portrayed by Unity Phelan.
Keanu Reeves’ latest John Wick instalment is soaring high at the box office, grossing over $137 million globally on its opening weekend. While sharing details about Chapter 4’s financial success, the chairman of Lionsgate, Joe Drake, shared the possible release window of Ballerina. He did not mention a particular date for the spinoff. But he revealed that the film would hit the theatres worldwide in the spring or summer of next year.
The upcoming spinoff’s events will take place between the events of “Chapter 3 – Parabellum” and “Chapter 4”. Apart from de Armas, the film’s cast consists of Ian McShane, Keanu Reeves, Lance Reddick, Angelica Huston, Norman Reedus, and many more.
Reeves’ John Wick franchise has proved to be very successful for Lionsgate. The studio wants to capitalise on this scenario and has every reason to be in high spirits. Although, it will be intriguing to see how the studio handles the franchise in Reeves’ absence. If de Armas’ Ballerina proves its worth in the eyes of Lionsgate, then the fans may see more spinoffs getting greenlighted from the studio.
In addition to Ana de Armas’ Ballerina, Lionsgate is also working on ‘The Continental’ series, starring Ian McShane. Stay tuned for more updates.
