Joker: Folie à Deux, better known as Joker 2, marks Joaquin Phoenix’s second outing as Gotham’s popular but deranged, nihilistic criminal with a clown-inspired persona. Apart from Phoenix, the highly anticipated sequel also has Zazie Beetz, who returns to play Sophie Dumond, Arthur’s imaginary girlfriend in the first movie. Along these two talents, we have some new faces such as Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn and Harry Lawtey as Harvey Dent.
Speaking of Dent, the character’s face did not appear in the latest Joker 2 trailer. But we did hear his voice calling the Clown Prince of Gotham “a monster” instead of a martyr. This was confirmed by the trailer’s subtitles.
Harvey Dent last appeared in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. Aaron Eckhart gave a bone-chilling performance as both Dent and his criminal alter ego, Two-Face, in that masterpiece. His performance aided the movie in becoming as iconic as we know it today. This scenario definitely raises the bar for Lawtey.
Before becoming the mad and unpredictable Two-Face, Dent was Gotham City’s District Attorney and fought strongly against the city’s crime and criminals. Also known as Gotham’s White Knight, Dent played a key role in curbing crime in the city. But it all changed after he lost his sanity and half of his face, turning into Two-Face.
Based on the movie’s trailer and popular fan theories, it seems like Dent will prosecute Arthur Fleck in “the trial of the century” in Joker 2. While some will appreciate him for his work, others (especially Joker’s supporters) will hate him for his actions.
But here’s the real question: Will Harvey Dent turn into Two-Face in Joker: Folie à Deux? The first Joker movie gained substantial attention mainly because of how much it deviated from the DC lore in terms of storyline. A similar case may happen with Lawtey’s Harvey Dent. We could witness his transition into Two-Face with a major twist in the upcoming Joker sequel. And we should also expect Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck to play an important role in Dent’s transformation into Two-Face. Let’s see what happens.
Joker: Folie à Deux will arrive in theatres worldwide on October 4 this year. Stay tuned for more updates.
