More than a year back, Amazon Studios had reportedly acquired the rights to create a television series adaptation based on one of the most popular video game series of all time – ‘Fallout’. In a recent development, the eagerly anticipated Amazon show has now got its showrunners namely Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Writer – Captain Marvel, Tomb Raider) and Graham Wagner (Writer – Silicon Valley, The Office).
Not just that, the video game series adaptation will be directed by the supremely talented writer-filmmaker Jonathan Nolan (younger brother of eminent director Christopher Nolan). Jonathan Nolan will set the initial tempo and has been roped in to purportedly direct the opening episode of the series. Nolan will also executive produce the show along with his better half Lisa Joy.
For the unversed, ‘Fallout’ is a bestselling role-playing video game that is set against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic and futuristic America. The goings-on take place years after a large-scale nuclear war and somewhere in the middle of the 22nd century. The gameplay revolved around the central character’s endeavors to find a solution to the faulty water supply system for a nuclear shelter. The first edition of the critically and commercially successful ‘Fallout’ game came out in the year 1997.
Jonathan Nolan has lent his writing skills to some ground-breaking Hollywood films and television series. His elder brother and filmmaker Christopher Nolan incidentally made his directorial debut with Guy Pearce’s inventive mystery thriller film ‘Memento’ (which was later remade into ‘Ghajini’ starring Bollywood actor Aamir Khan). The film was adapted from Jonathan Nolan’s short story ‘Memento Mori’.
Subsequently, the filmmaker duo collaborated in eminent films like ‘The Prestige’ (starring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale), ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ (starring Christian Bale), and the epic science fiction blockbuster ‘Interstellar’ (starring Matthew McConaughey). On the television front, Jonathan Nolan is credited with giving us the terrific sci-fi action-thriller series ‘Person of Interest’ starring Jim Caviezel, before moving on to the critically acclaimed western-dystopian TV series ‘Westworld’.
Besides Amazon’s ‘Fallout’ series adaptation, Jonathan Nolan’s forthcoming projects include the psychological-horror anthology series titled ‘Unknown’ at Amazon, futuristic science fiction thriller titled ‘The Peripheral’ through Amazon Studios, and Jake Gyllenhaal starrer western drama miniseries ‘The Son’.
