Hollywood is ready to get another high-profile capitalism origin story in the form of ‘Cola Wars’, which will be helmed by Judd Apatow with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment attached to produce. Deadline first broke the news. The film has entered the developmental stage at Sony.
The studio bought the project at $1 million+ as a pitch back in April this year. The film will focus on the true story of Pepsi’s attempt in the 1980s to challenge the supremacy of Coca-Cola’s decades-long reign in the global soft drink sector.
The duo of Ben Queen and Jason Shuman is working on the film’s script, with Spielberg producing the project via his Amblin Entertainment banner. Maia Eyre is overseeing the film for Sony.
Queen is known to adapt Vita Sackville-West’s novella ‘A Note of Explanation’ for Netflix. He also wrote the last two ‘Cars’ entries for Pixar. On the other hand, Shuman served as the co-showrunner and writer for Apple’s Acapulco. He has also co-executively produced HBO’s Winning Time. Deadline has also pointed out that “Queen is a coke guy, while Shuman prefers Pepsi.”
Judd Apatow’s attachment guarantees that ‘Cola Wars’ will be brimmed with plenty of humour. But Spielberg’s involvement gives the overall project a sheen of prestige. Stay tuned for more updates.
