When it comes to the true-crime genre, streaming giant Netflix has become the unchallenged master of films and series on the subject. The streamer has racked up an impressive library of true-crime documentaries, each more compelling than the next. Come July, Netflix will premiere another one of its much-awaited true-crime documentary series, titled ‘D.B. Cooper, Where Are You?’. The series premieres on Netflix on 13th July; and it is one of our July must-watch titles.
In 1971, a quiet, well-dressed man called Dan Cooper bought a one-way ticket on Flight 305 from Portland to Seattle. Mid-air, the man hijacked the plane, demanded 4 parachutes and $200,000 in cash, then jumped into the night with the money, never to be seen again. The case of Dan Cooper, aka D.B. Cooper, remains one of the great, unsolved crimes in the history of the USA. It has turned into an enduring legend, translated into numerous films and series by various content creators. Now, Netflix is renewing the great, abiding mystery with its series, ‘D.B. Cooper, Where Are You?’
Just like its predecessors, the Netflix series will try to decode the D. B. Cooper mystery, sifting the myths from the facts. ‘D.B. Cooper, Where Are You?’ will also delve into the volunteer detective work done by internet sleuths, to narrow down on the identity of the actual Dan Cooper. It’s been 50 years to the stunning mid-air crime, but the police has nary a shred of evidence on the elusive criminal.
D. B. Cooper has turned into an urban legend. The character has turned up in several shows and movies, played for laughs or mystery or just for the fun of it. Recent instances are Prison Break, where the character of Charles Westmoreland reveals his identity as D. B. Cooper and the place he’s buried the ransom money. More recently, the Disney Plus – Marvel show ‘Loki’ showed Loki (Tom Hiddleston) as D. B. Cooper, jumping off a plane with the money in broad daylight. It was all in jest, and generated fan-talk on social media for a few days after.
‘D.B. Cooper, Where Are You?’ premieres on Netflix on July 13. Have a look at the trailer of the series here –
