It is well known that the Karan Johar production Kalank, directed by Abhishek Varman, had turned out to be the surprise flop of the year for Bollywood. The film had everything going for it prior to release; great cast, wonderful music, impressive canvas and what not? But the failure has once again reiterated that content has become the king at the box office regardless of its star value. As the film gets ready to stream on digital platforms soon, one wonders if the makers had considered making Kalank as a TV series. Well, we tell you why!
Kalank’s major issue was the fact that no character was established well with the audiences despite the beautiful sets and locations, probably owing to time constraints of a commercial narrative. The detailing pertaining to the Independence era was found wanting too. The basic advantage of a web series is the freedom it allows to explore the journey of multiple characters and backdrops well. Kalank could have really taken advantage of the digital space, probably with a lesser scale, in production and the cast.
The characters in Kalank had the aura and complexity but lacked depth and conviction. This is where a digital medium as a form of storytelling could have made all the difference. Nevertheless, the world has moved on from Kalank, but this is an option that Karan Johar’s production company Dharma can consider in the future. With Karan Johar’s tie-up with Netflix for production of multiple originals, the filmmaker should seriously put more thought into choosing the right stories for the digital medium.
