By now, many of you should have already heard, the upcoming Kannada blockbuster feature, ‘K.G.F: Chapter 2’ has been postponed to 14th April 2022. Hombale Films, the producers of KGF and KGF Chapter 2, made the announcement on social media that KGF2 would only release in theatres in the aforementioned date, a few days ago. While the postponement of this theatrical release has disappointed fans, distributors and Karnataka theatres as well, Kerala theatres happily welcome this change. This is because, the film is planning on releasing during the Malayalam Calendar’s New Year in 2022 – during the festival of Vishu, which will serve as a huge attraction for the Keralalite crowd to check out this film in theatres.
Kerala theatres (like the theatres in the rest of the country) have been suffering quite a bit during its recent, ongoing three month lockdown. However, the theatres in Kerala were one of the last ones to open around the state after the first lockdown restrictions were lifted – with the CM lifting the first theatre lockdown only by mid of January 2021. Kerala theatres have been shut down for a longer period of time – which is bordering close to 14 months in total – making it one of the longest closed periods for theatres and cinema halls around the globe. With the theatre industry on the verge of collapse in the state, the Vishu release date for ‘K.G.F Chapter 2’ is a welcome one for the South-Indian distributors and theatre owners.
The prequel to ‘K.G.F: Chapter 2’, ‘K.G.F: Chapter 1’, was the biggest box office success of all time in the Kannada film industry and the producers are hoping to get an even bigger reaction when this movie releases. That includes releasing this movie during a time when the coronavirus is no longer in the forefront of everyone’s minds as well as when 100% theatre capacity is allowed. Hopefully, by the time 2022 rolls around, the third wave of the coronavirus should have become a distant memory.
