Khel Khel Mein: A Film Too Mature For Viewers? Check Out Mudassar Aziz’s Views

Director Mudassar Aziz has finally opened up about the commercial failure of his latest directional venture, Khel Khel Mein, starring the likes of Akshay Kumar, Taapsee Pannu, Fardeen Khan, Vaani Kapoor, Ammy Virk, Pragya Jaiswal, and Aditya Seal.

In a recent interview with Zoom Entertainment, Aziz discussed the movie’s underperformance at the box office in detail and pointed out the “bittersweet feeling” that has plagued the actors involved with his project. He even claimed that “maturity of mind is required to comprehend a film such as Khel Khel Mein.

Check out his entire statement below!

“My biggest learning has been that there is a very large chunk of our theatre-going, ticket-buying Hindi cinema audience has very heavily tilted in the age group of 15-30. This audience will buy tickets depending on several factors, which are sometimes not related to how much they would enjoy your film. The film needs to come across like an event. And an event precedes itself, before the quality of the film.”

When asked about whether Aziz was able to project the movie like an event, he replied, “Let’s start with choice of story, let’s start with economic strata, let’s start with maturity of mind required to comprehend a film such as Khel Khel Mein. Why talk about marketing and release date? There’s a certain mental intelligence, a certain awareness about relationships; there is a prerequisite to Khel Khel Mein. It’s not an out-and-out entertainer, it’s asking questions about relationships, about marriages, about orientations…”

Now, here’s the main question: Are Aziz’s words true? Well, first we have to “comprehend” the reasons behind Khel Khel Mein’s commercial failure. And we believe you already know a reason: Akshay Kumar. His ongoing flop streak commenced way back with Bachchhan Paandey (2022). All of his recent movies have flopped hard at the box office, except OMG 2 (2023), which benefitted immensely from the prominence of its hit 2012 predecessor.

It seems like Khiladi Kumar cannot understand that too much of a good thing is not good at all. Once considered the crown jewel of many producers, his recent projects have lost producers tons of money. It’s not just that he picked up bad stories in recent years, but also his crazy obsession to work in 4-6 movies in a year does not make any sense. We don’t know whether he wants to mint as much money as he can or he is trying to race against time, but his current movie selection strategy has clearly shattered his stardom and impact in Bollywood.

Akshay Kumar has been incredibly busy this year. He’s already appeared in four movies, including a cameo in Stree 2. And that’s not all! He has two more movies coming out before the year is over – Sky Force and an extended cameo in Singham Again, talk about quantity over quality! All of his recent flicks, including Khel Khel Mein, are half-baked and are certainly far away from being called quality products. His dedication is admirable, but his fans might be starting to wonder if he’s more interested in filling his bank account than delivering satisfying films. Some people may even neglect a Christopher Nolan movie if it stars Kumar as the leading man.

Based on his recent comments, it seems like Aziz truly believes that his latest project is flawless. But that’s definitely not the case! At best, the movie is a good and one-time watchable project. But it is certainly not something that the Indian audience cannot comprehend. Come on, Aziz! We are not that stupid! His comments would have made more sense if the movie was an original project. For those of you who don’t know, Khel Khel Mein is a remake of Paolo Genovese’s 2016 Italian flick, Perfect Strangers. And Aziz’s movie stands nowhere near the original project.

Khel Khel Mein benefits from the brilliant performances of Akshay Kumar and Ammy Virk. Also, it has some good comedic and lighthearted moments. Kumar and Virk do all the heavy lifting in terms of comedy. But the rest of the cast seems lost, particularly Fardeen Khan, who looks out of touch in many scenes. The director could have made better use of the script’s potential, and the film lacks any memorable songs. Overall, the film is fairly straightforward and doesn’t require a deep understanding to appreciate. Stay tuned for more updates.
