On October 5, 2023, Netflix unveiled “Khufiya,” the spy thriller film based on the real-life espionage narrative detailed in Amar Bhushan’s novel, “Escape to Nowhere.” Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, known for his Shakespearean adaptations, the film introduces us to Krishna Mehra (Tabu), an intelligence operative at India’s Research & Analysis Wing (RAW). Her mission: to unearth a mole leaking defense secrets, while her emotional turmoil revolves around the duality of her identity as a spy and a lover.
The film’s cast features Ali Fazal as Ravi Mohan and Wamiqa Gabbi as Charu, supported by talents like Ashish Vidyarthi, Atul Kulkarni, and Alexx O’Nell.
“Khufiya” has received mixed reviews, with some praising the performances, cinematography, and music. However, critics noted shortcomings in the screenplay, editing, and direction. Comparisons to other spy thrillers like “Raazi,” “Baby,” and “D-Day” abound.
This spy thriller’s journey extended beyond the screen, earning it the 5th spot among the most-watched non-English films on Netflix during its debut week, with 13.2 million hours of viewing. Despite its success, it couldn’t dethrone Kareena Kapoor’s “Jaane Jaan,” which claimed the top spot earlier with 18.8 million hours of views.
Sub-standard promotions, bad reviews and lack of glamour might have affected the potential but a director like Vishal Bhardwaj certainly deserves more.
